What does a retinal health check include?
During your retinal health check, one of our world-class ophthalmologists will perform an eye assessment using state-of-the-art retinal imaging techniques, such as:
- Visual Acuity Test - measures how clearly you can see at various distances using a standardised eye chart. This test helps assess vision sharpness and detect refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness.
- Intraocular Pressure Measurement - assesses the pressure inside your eye to screen for glaucoma and other eye conditions. This is typically done with a specialised device that lightly touches the eye.
- Dilation with Drops - eye drops are used to widen the pupils, allowing a more detailed examination of the retina and optic nerve. This procedure helps detect eye diseases and other vision issues.
- Blood Pressure Measurement - checks the pressure in your arteries using a cuff and gauge. Monitoring blood pressure is essential for detecting hypertension or other cardiovascular conditions that may affect overall health.
- Optical coherence tomography 鈥� a non-invasive imaging method using a special camera which takes a series of images to create a detailed map of your retina.
- Fundus autofluorescence 鈥� a non-invasive type of retinal photography that uses naturally occurring fluorescence from the retina to highlight a retinal pigment that increases if your retina has been damaged.
- Wide-field retinal imaging 鈥� this approach takes high-resolution photographs of the retina to create a 2D image of your retinal tissue.

Retinal health checks for medication toxicity
Regular retinal health checks can help detect vision changes from medication toxicity in the following conditions:
- Rheumatoid arthritis 鈥� People with rheumatoid arthritis may use medications like Hydroxychloroquine, which can lead to retinal toxicity if used long-term.
- Lupus 鈥� Lupus patients often require medications such as Hydroxychloroquine, which carries a risk of retinal toxicity with prolonged use.
- Photosensitive skin disorders 鈥� Certain photosensitive conditions are treated with Hydroxychloroquine, which may cause retinal toxicity over time.
Your retinal health check consists of several essential tests to support your consultation and provide a comprehensive assessment of your eye health. These tests are carried out by our trained clinical team and will include:
- Visual Assessment
- Intraocular Pressure Test
- Blood Pressure Measurement
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scan
- Fundus Autofluorescence
- Optos Wide Field Imaging Scan
As part of the tests, our clinical staff member will use eye drops to dilate (widen) your pupils to ensure a clear view of your retina. This will cause temporary stinging.
The retinal imaging tests use specialised equipment. In most cases, this will involve:
- Sitting in front of the imaging device.
- Placing your chin and forehead in a specific position to stabilize your head
- The equipment capturing high-resolution images of your eyes in a few seconds to minutes
Following the tests, you will meet with your consultant, who will review the results with you and discuss any findings or necessary next steps.
You will be able to go straight home after your retinal health check. However, if you have had eye drops to dilate your pupils, your vision may be blurry for up to six hours, so you should arrange for someone to drive you home.
Depending on which tests you had, you may also find that you have less tolerance for bright lights after the procedure. It鈥檚 a good idea to bring sunglasses with you so that you can wear them afterwards if your eyes are unusually sensitive to light following the procedure.
The full set of tests will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
Your consultant will receive the results immediately and go through them with you as part of your consultation. This allows for a real-time discussion of your eye health and any necessary next steps.
The retinal imaging techniques are extremely safe and have no known risks.
